Life because of water

One of the most recent expeditions of science was to attempt to find water on Mars, was all to prove that Mars could support life, but all of this ignores one common thought, and that thought of course is that Biology may be wrong. You see for years Biology has stuck to a to a series of logic checks when it comes to life, mostly because we're stuck on a single planet and really haven't seen life outside of that ecosystem. So our thought is that life must require the conditions on our planet in order evolve or come into being.

Really that is arrogance on our part, and it has lead to helping religions establish their belief system, which leads to the thought that another form of life would all but destroy most religious beliefs, especially if we run into a group that is polytheistic (also why the hell is 1 god a more advanced thought than many gods?). But more on my hopes later, really we're harping on biology. The fact of the matter is we have made assumptions based solely on our own Biosphere. Sure, that is in line with science, to make laws / theory based only off of observations, but I feel that it ignores some key facts about our scientific knowledge.

First, we assume that viruses are non living, mostly on the case that they don't have the ability to replicate on their own, that they require another life form in order to reproduce, but if that is what is separating viruses from life than what about all the insects which require another form of life in order for their offspring to come to be? I mean sure they are injecting something a little more complex than a strand or 2 of RNA, but on the same note they are a good deal larger.

There is also the notion that somehow all life must be hydrocarbon based. I mean that is why we're on mars, to find water, thus suggesting life could be there. Really the water could mean nothing, I mean what if life has come to be on Venus, and they have evolved to live off of Sulfuric Acid. Really its our qualifications for life, now granted they have been adapted so that we don't call a fire a living thing anymore, but maybe the carbon / hydro requirement is a bit off.

I don't know, maybe its just because I don't have a PhD / Major in biology, but it would seem to me that we are taking a very narrow perspective on what life is.

The Stand Alone Complex #1

Alright, first of all I would like to clarify that this is in no way my idea, in fact several people have started to recognize that this theory applies well to a very interesting group. Now it should also be pointed out that the standalone complex is not considered a real theory, its just something peeled from an anime / manga. But as the internet evolves I become increasingly interested in a real life counterpart for the Stand Alone Complex. As of yet, I haven't found a theory that offers a similar take on real life events, so if we're lucky, Ghost in the Shell may very well have come up with its own philosophical theory, and it may very well have been right. For those not sure what the theory is:

While originally intended to "underscore the dilemmas and concerns that people would face if they relied too heavily on the new communications infrastructure," Stand Alone Complex eventually came to represent a phenomenon where unrelated, yet very similar actions of individuals create a seemingly concerted effort.

A Stand Alone Complex can be compared to the emergent copycat behavior that often occurs after incidents such as serial murders or terrorist attacks. An incident catches the public's attention and certain types of people "get on the bandwagon", so to speak. It is particularly apparent when the incident appears to be the result of well-known political or religious beliefs, but it can also occur in response to intense media attention. For example, a mere fire, no matter the number of deaths, is just a garden variety tragedy. However, if the right kind of people begin to believe it was arson, caused by deliberate action, the threat that more arsons will be committed increases drastically.

What separates the Stand Alone Complex from normal copycat behavior is that the originator of the copied action is not even a real person, but merely a rumored figure that commits said action. Even without instruction or leadership a certain type of person will spring into action to imitate the rumored action and move toward the same goal even if only subconsciously. The result is an epidemic of copied behavior-with no originator. One could say that the Stand Alone Complex is mass hysteria-with purpose.

But more to the point, I would like to speak about real life instances of this supposed Stand Alone Complex. And they are coming from a very interesting source, the Internet. It would seem that as soon as you couple anonymity with a media format in which no human being is present, what seems to occur is what essentially amounts to a meme. That meme that continues on even spilling over into the real world, without the original owner ever being known

A perfect example of this is the Rickroll, the original creator of the RickRoll will never be known, and might as well have never existed. But the fact of the matter is that it is now spreading into the real world, the RickRoll has appeared just about everywhere: National sporting events, Local School Events, etc. All of them orchestrated by individuals who have no other connections to the original than having watched the video.

I would like to continue this later on, with relation to the *chan's, the attacks on Scientology, Digg, and Slashdot, all have created instances of the Stand Alone complex and should prove an interesting investigation.

Way to go Sid Meier

So, I was recently trying to play civilization 3, sadly that all went to hell when the game decided, that I the one who had payed for it, was not in fact the original owner. That's right, thanks to the wonderful copyright protection that went into the game, it is convinced that I do not have the original disk. So, really I just wanted to thank Firaxis games, I really was hoping to enjoy Civ 3 and all its glory, and what I end up with is a nasty mess of tech support.

The problem there of course is the Firaxis has decided against providing easy access to any form of technical support. I suppose that happens when you interlace a game company with another game company, on top of yet another game company. So I tried looking through 2k games for contact information, thinking maybe they had inherited Civ 3 and could help out.

No contact info on any of the sites, and at this point I was getting just a tad bit frustrated, I mean really I had legitimately bought the game, and I was hoping to find a solution that didn't involve me cracking my own game. I finally came to the decision that I was fed up with the whole thing and I wasn't going to use piracy against the anti piracy software for one of the few computer games I own.

Needless to say I simply uninstalled the game and moved on, hoping that Civ 4 might provide a distraction while I sulked about my lack of Civ 3. The big problem with civ 4 is that it moves very fast compared to civ 3, (which I played to waste away hours of my time). Add to this that I missed the huge map editor that came with civ 3 that is hidden away in Civ 4. I mean huge is a big map, but I feel it is lacking in comparison to Civ 3's 365 x 365 map sizes.

But for the time being, I guess I'll have to stick with Civ 4 as the only alternative as all the tech support options for Civ 3 seem to simply involve cracking the game.

Apparently when Sony released God of War 2 they really went all out. Now I know this old news now, but I found it to be rather interesting. You see one of the big things they did was hold it in Greece, and allow some of the oddest things to occur. This includes allowing guest to the party to reach into a recently slaughtered goat to pull Offal from the stomach, along with topless waitresses and allowing guest to pull live snakes from a pit.

An interesting series of questions was posed to Barak Obama through the most unlikely of sources. Foxnews.com, The questions tackled issues that really do need to be addressed, or spoken about if he hopes to show any form of consistency, including his stance on the issue of Cuba.

Until recently the democratic nominee’s choice that the Cuban embargo was somehow useful to the nation of Cuba, this of course being in direct opposition to prior statements regarding the allowance of trade with Cuba again so that their floundering economy could get a pickup.

In the tech news front
Citibank still hates Linux users, if you attempt to login on to their site through a Linux based operating system, expect to get a blank screen and the assurance that you need to use a secure OS like windows. This coming from the company that is using Solaris to run its servers. That’s just wonderful.

Really this kind of ignorance is just sad, it comes from a tech department of 30+ folks with a CTO who graduated learning AGOL. And the problem runs down the line. People need to learn that as long as the browser can read it, 9 times out of 10 the OS will have no effect on the rendering or safety of the page, (at least with a website that isn’t harmful to begin with)

So I've decided to save my news story for the video tomorrow. Oh by the way I have made up a schedule for my video's, so that the two people who actually care to watch it will be kept up with something semi interesting. In the mean time i think I'm just going to focus on myself, and be all blogfaggy and such. I'm not really sure why, other than the fact that I think I just need to vent and the best way to do that is to simply not pay attention to what's going on around me on the international front.

With regards to Purdue University. Everyone keeps telling me that I simply need to read the pounds of flyers / bullshit they have sent me in order to really understand what is going on. My thought is, if I wanted to learn by reading, than I wouldn't need to apply for any college on the planet, and I could sit down and read. Don't get me wrong, I like to read, but I don't like being told that I need to pile through 3 tons of bullshit only to get 1 - 2 useful facts out of the whole endeavor. That's why the whole verbal communication process exist. So that I can speak / converse in some manner with a real human being and get straight to the point of things. If I cared for the fluff I would read it on my own time, but with so few weeks until I pack up and head 9 hours away to a corn filled state, I would like to get key details out of the way such as but not limited to, where it is I am living, how it is I am paying for these things, etc.

It's just that I wish there were more active attempts at communication, for such a successful college I would think they would take more effort to send me useful non flyer based mail. I don't know its not really that big a deal I suppose, they have a great many students to take care of, it just feels so impersonal.

In other news I was able to get a hold of a new phone, I am hoping that it will get better reception / whatever so that I don't have calls just suddenly drop out on me. Also I think this is the most blog post that I have done in a row without some kind of distraction.

So yeah... anyway hopefully I should have a new video to you sometime in the near future.

2 New Banks Down

The first National Bank of Nevada and the first heritage bank of North America both have failed over the weekend, with the FDIC doing as it normally does and closing the banks down on a Friday so that it can go about to taking over.

While of course this comes no where close the number of banks that failed in the 1980's (whose number totaled around 3000). It is still the largest number of bank closings in quite a while, quickly coming to dwarf the several failures that occurred in early 2002. What will make this worse than 2002 is that for the most part, besides the political bickering (which the media has been focusing on for the last 7 months), tit has been a slow news year. And they love stories that may or may not incite panic. So undoubtedly this will be making headlines if something else doesn't come up.

What happens than is that more people will be looking at their banks and evaluating them. Add this to the fact that several large banks are expected to fail and simply haven't yet.

And you get a nasty economic future. Of course the best thing to do right now is have a little faith in the banking system, because if people begin to panic, than that is what causes the chain reaction, much like the one seen in the 1980's. I would also like to point out that it was a republican president in charge both times =D. I'm not saying much... I'm just saying blame Regan and his now rotting corpse for the evils of the world

Anyway fact of the matter is that this by no means indicates a large scale failure of the United States economic system. It simply means that the economy will be going through some rather rough times in the near future. In my local area they are putting all hope into a VW plant that is going up in the near future. I of course would be leaving as soon as it gets approved. But really what it tells me is that our primary money source (Industrial Manufacturing) is changing.

Meh thoughts aside, I'm hungry and need of a burger because I'm a fat, lazy, blogging, and happy American. So suck a corn dog I guess..

Minimum Wage

In a recent change in the world, the minimum wage has been raised nation wide to the grand total of 6.55. This doesn't affect all states, as some have already had their minimum wage far above that, but where I live that is the full increase of .70 cents. The plan is to raise the minimum wage again within 1 year to the total of 7.25. Of course as with anything aimed at abolishing social slavery, it has been met with a great deal of hatred and contempt by those who claim to know how it is that big business works. Big business than happily agrees with those who say that they are trying to defend themselves by helping big business.

They go so far as to suggest that the whole concept of minimum wage should simply be disbanded. This concept would than be replaced by a completely free market in which a business could pay their employees anything they wished even .20 an hour. Really when you think about that concept it sends pre civil war shivers up your spine. The fact of the matter is that minimum wage needs to go further than it is now, much further. Because the big problem isn't that business won't hire more for fear of loosing money, the CEO's and Board of Directors make far to much for that ever to be a concern, the big fear is that of inflation, of course this is just born out of stupidity regarding the market.

You see children inflation doesn't come from giving more money to poor people, money that was already in the system that is. Rather it comes from printing new money because those who are intelligent enough to be rich, took the step to horde and invest their money, so that it never actually hits the system. What this causes is the federal government to send more money forcefully into the system in order to keep it a float, all the while the money they printed previously has never seen the outside of a bank.

So that fear really isn't warranted. The next fear is that businesses won't hire as many people. Given that most businesses already pay over the minimum wage to begin with, I don't really think it will phase them. But the fact of the matter is that this has to stop. Paying even close to minimum wage is still social slavery. I mean when you think about it you are only given enough money for food, shelter, and clothing. What about that doesn't scream wrong in someone's eye?

It's disturbing to me, as well as many others, that we see that style of living, that kind of poverty as acceptable in the eyes of any society. The problem of course is that those with money and influence have no problems with that kind of mentality, and simply chuck it up to the ideas of a capitalist market. But you can't blame an open market for the concept of slavery, there becomes a point when it becomes the social responsibility of a business or cooperation to take care of its employees and make sure they are not only above the poverty line, but also don't live simply off of their necessities.

The first place to start within a society to attempt to correct this is within the education system. To fund far larger amounts of money into a school system, to pay Teachers more, shrink classroom sizes, and improve facilities and technology. In addition to that a change in curriculum must take place. A focus on thinking critically rather than on memorization. If this includes extending school hours to year long than all the better.

This of course touches on a getting into a brand new economic theory that doesn't use a capitalistic core, but more on that later. Until than...

A CNN reporter who did a series on the bloated 1 million name + list that the TSA uses in order to detain you at the airport claims that he too is getting hassled. The TSA is of course denying any allegation that it’s their faults, and claims the airports are to blame. The airports have in turn claimed that were simply going off the list provided by the TSA.

By the way if you would like to find out if you are an America hating terrorist they say that it is pretty easy to find the list. Much to my disappointment I couldn’t find the list to find out if I hated America enough to be detained at an airport. If someone out there can find it, please feel free to point it out the res t of us so we can all get a good laugh.

A man stole buses during the day, drove them on their routes, and returned them at night. He didn’t steal the bus fair, he didn’t hurt the passengers, he just drove the buses on their route and did it all in an employee’s uniform. The motives are a complete mystery, but the man has been charged with 3 counts of grand theft auto.

Having been on the local buses, and imagining the magnification that Miami Florida would perform on the normal attendants of said buses. I think the man should simply be given a check for driving the buses around. I can only imagine the kind of strange faces you see on a bus in Florida, but I suppose if you have the motivation not to get paid for doing a job, you are more than likely fine with those faces.

Obama Speech in Germany

Recently, presidential canidate, Barak Obama, went to Germany to give a wonderful speech to the crowd. Look lets face it folks, John McCain doesn't have a shot in hell of winning this race, the second that he and Senator Obama are put on the same stage for a debate, both McCain's age and horrible ideas will begin to show through, and the message that the democratic party has been pushing for the last year or so might actually begin to show through.

The fact of the matter is that when you look at John McCain's political positions he really does show through as just another Bush Clone. And given people hatred towards our current president... I can't understand why people would even be willing to give this man an ear. I could see maybe a 20%-30% approval rating for McCain, less so than our current president, because I imagine some folks are simply following him because they have some soul bound patriotic duty not to dislike the president (Of course the irony there is that is in fact the very opposite of what this country was founded on, but more on that later).

So anyway with regards to the Obama speech, he hasn't become President of the United States, and he is already responsible for two speeches that will probably ring throughout history for at least the next five years or so. Really, I could care less for all the speeches and the politics, that doesn't change the reality of things, being of course the Europe is still pretty offset about our nature to react so violently to attack. I guess after 1000+ years of internal warfare and conflict, they are simply used to the idea and aren't over reacting to things like terrorist attacks because they are nothing more than a modern day castle ransack. Hell during the roman times entire cities were lost, and Rome sat quietly and sipped wine. The United States hasn't had to endure that, not since the Civil War, and even than it wasn't an outside enemy. The last time an outside enemy was able to lay siege (memorable siege) was the burning of the White House in the war of 1812.

So really I wouldn't be surprised if even while the Europeans we're clapping they weren't a bit thrown off by the terrorism markup. Which I imagine was aimed at appeasing the home front who watches CNN / Faux News.

Anyway, just some thoughts...

Covering for Star Trek Writers #1

I'd like to run a series of articles, on how to explain away obvious holes in the writing that is done for Star Trek series over time. I don't know why I have any motivation to do this, but I thought I might as well do it for the sake of amusing myself, and keeping others informed with pseudo information, so they too may feel better about themselves and their fandom.

So the question than becomes, what is one of the first issues that I want to address? I thought I might go after the series "Star Trek: Voyager" and their increasing ease in their ability to defeat the Borg in a confrontation. It went from being scared of dead drones,and avoiding the Borg at all cost, all the way to flying into a Borg base and blasting away like it was no ones business.

I think this one is actually one of the easier holes to cover, and it has a lot to do with Voyager simply passing through the Delta Quadrant. The fact is that we know that Voyager was picking up technology as it went, so in that regard it was already more advanced than most Federation starships out there, due to a combination of the already advanced design of Voyager (which was more than likely designed to combat the Borg, given the timeline). It was no old Galaxy class or Miranda, rather it was a new off the line Intrepid, and than they get to run through the Delta Quadrant, and like a woman in a shoe store, begin to pick up any technology they wish to (all while of course sticking to the Prime Directive).

What this leads to is them running into the Borg in a conflict, a conflict the Borg are loosing, to a species that voyager would later make an alliance with. Add to this the Borg Drone they picked up. Picard had only been a drone for a matter of days, and was easily able to pinpoint a weakness in the Borg Cube attacking earth, 7 of 9 represents a Borg Drone who had been with the collective for a very long time, and had a great deal of knowledge regarding the technology used by the Borg. So she hands it over to the Voyager crew, and this is brought up many times throughout the series. Its mentioned in nearly every episode where a major change has been made to the ship, that 7 of 9 was a key element in this upgrade.

So there you have it, perhaps the defeat of the Borg scout ship in episodes like Dark Frontier 1 & 2. Also there was the knowledge provided by the Hanson's which never made it back to Federation HQ. Sure the Borg may have assimilated the Hanson's, but the Voyager crew could easily have modified it.

Obama in Iraq For the past week or so, Presidential candidate Barak Obama has been on a tour of several key Middle Eastern states including Iraq and Afghanistan. This would be one of his first trips to the region. And while he’s being criticized for not doing this earlier, I have to say I find it interesting that the Republican Party is taking him to town on this one, given that he really hasn’t had a chance to visit Iraq anyway. McCain barks and preaches about multiple visits, the problem there of course is McCain has been in National politics since the 1980’s, I’d be more worried if he hadn’t made visits to the area. Obama has only been a senator since 2005. Also I find it funny that his name is one of the few that you can search for on Google, and it will bring up his own website before Wikipedia.

But the point is he will be going over there to talk with key military leaders in the region to get an idea of how things are going. Given that I could care less about either candidate this year, simply because regardless of what party they are from and who they are, I doubt they have the capacity to restore this nation to any form of glory. But of the candidates on the field, Barak Obama looks like he’d do the best job of not screwing it up for the rest of us. So I suppose I’ll vote for him, assuming of course some cracked out KKK loving redneck doesn’t do the unthinkable…. I really hope the secret service is keeping an eye out on this one.

Gas Prices
And 30 years after the Carter Administration and we are still dependent on gas, sometimes I think it simply isn’t worth it to have a drivers License. With gas around here finally peaking out around $4.00 and the senate just now taking the time to look at the issue, I am left to wonder if they will be able to pull it off. I mean let’s face it, there is no reason why we should be paying as much as we are for gas. I could see if Gas Companies we’re breaking even… but they are making record profits. And the problem is that no one is really able to boycott the substance because we are quite frankly addicted to it. And alternative fuel sources seem to be several years away before they can be implemented properly.

You add this to some crackpot craze for Ethanol, which isn’t any more helpful than gas to begin with, and you end up some interesting times. Honestly Truckers just need to sit down and riot, the second the primary method of transportation for a good perce3ntage of the world’s goods tell people they are no longer doing their job unless the price of gas drops, I assure you that people would begin to pay attention

The Dark Knight has become one of the biggest movies of all time, beating out that miserable and undeserving failure of a movie, Spiderman 3. Having seen the movie myself, I must say it probably deserves the title. While it may not be the greatest movie of all time, it certainly is the best movie of this year, and I doubt very much if anything will be capable of topping it.

Backup Blogging

So, my site went down about a month ago. There was some mild attempt to save it made by a friend of mine, but due to some rather problematic DNS shortcomings and issues, it was made near impossible to put back on the web without going to some financial lengths. Long story short, I have very little faith that the site will be returning anytime in the near future. So for now, I think I am going to work out of a combination of Youtube, Proboards.com, and Blogger in order to stay in contact with the world.

I think due to some life complications I will more than likely be dropping my affiliation with the Administrator Training Centre and My vForum, and refocus to simply me, That way I can take care of things that have been piling up in my life and need a great deal of attention, a refocus on reality if you will

I think I have been hiding in WoW for the past couple of months so I wouldn't have to deal with the financial / educational hole that I seem to have fallen into. I think finally getting a character in the game to 70 with 375 in all the secondary skills or whatever, and all the other small things that I finally feel like I've beaten it. I don't know I may keep up the account, it feels a waste to let it go on another month without playing. So I'll probably step back in from time to time, but I have to get out of it, or I'm going to go right out of mind.

In other news, I also need to get my stuff together for Purdue. I have spent the last 2 months just kind of putting it off, but the fact of the matter is that housing still has not contacted me, and I'm supposedly moving up there in only a matter of weeks. To put it simply, I'm a bit worried. So for the next couple of days I think I am going to concentrate on wrapping up anything they might need.

Past that, I will more than likely just split my time between this, My Youtube Channel, and That message board. Really it all makes me wish I had far more money at my disposal. Its so frustrating not to have money, and to know how very easy it is to get a hold of. An investment here, and savings bond there, and throw in a bit of manipulation and there you go, you have more money. Thoughts ran through my head of running scams, and more frighteningly I have this overwhelming want for the news to be nothing but horrible disasters, I suppose so that I don't have to deal with reality, because quite frankly it sucks.

They say I should be excited, that I should be happy about what is going on, but I'm just frustrated at this point, with myself, with my friends, with everything. Compound that with depression and more than likely a few physiological offsets along with a few family issues and you have the brew for a wonderful time.

It sounds odd, but I think what I really will need is just a vacation, and I'm sure I'll here hell not being employed at all for the past 2 years, rather spending my time as a student and getting my associates degree. But... yeah I could really go for just a month with no friends, no family, no house, no worries. But I leave in 4 weeks, it doesn't look like I'll be getting that for quite a while....

Anyway, I should have a new youtube video up sometime tomorrow morning, I don't quite know what I'm going to talk about yet, but I'd like to do a second video. I don't really have anyone watching them, but It did 100+ views, which was what I was judging for weather or not I should do a second video. In addition to that, I got a friend from Portland to give me some real criticism so I can work on a better video next time.

In other news, I really wish Firefox's Spell checker worked with Google's systems. Gmail, Blogger, because of the Ajax combination the Spellcheck doesn't work in any of them. A real shame I say
